The bridal Bouquet is the floral arrangement carried by the bride throughout her wedding day. It traditionally symbolises good luck, fertility and a new beginning for the couple.
The tradition of the bridal bouquet
In ancient times, particularly amongst the Greeks and Romans, brides-to-be wore wreaths or bouquets of aromatic plants such as garlic and rosemary, which were believed to have protective and good-luck properties.
In the Middle Ages, fragrant flowers and plants were said to have been used in particular to mask body odours, at a time when hygiene and bathing were infrequent. Plants were also associated with protection against evil spirits.
In the Victorian era, during the 19th century, the bouquet became more of a symbolic and romantic accessory. The choice of flowers could then convey specific messages through the language of flowers.
Who should present the bouquet?
Traditionally, the groom-to-be presents the bouquet: he chooses the floral arrangement to match the wedding theme and colour scheme, and gives it to his fiancée on the morning of the ceremony, before they enter the church or town hall.
The bouquet toss
A highlight of the reception, the bouquet toss is one of the liveliest moments of the day. Tradition dictates that all single women gather behind the bride. With her back to the group to ensure complete impartiality, the bride tosses her bouquet over her shoulder. Tradition has it that the person who catches it will be the next to get married.
